The Alternative "Monetary Settlement" should be rejected out of hand. I see no reason why Swain County should receive a cash payment despite a 1943 agreement. Swain County has benefited greatly by visitation to GSMNP, and has benefited from Fontana Lake. I see no reason why national taxpayers should pay additional money to the county.
Cash can never fill that void in the lives of the people living for a promise to be honored.
I cannot understand why so many people feel that the money should be given to the people of Swain County so that their property tax can be lowered. 98% of the people in Swain County did not have or are not descendents of the people moved out of North Shore. Many want this so they never have to pay property tax.
The people who want a settlement of money must be retired outside people.
Let’s just say if Swain County should get that $52 million, which there is no $52 million, but if they did, over time the purchasing power would depreciate. And if they use the interest, pretty soon it will depreciate till it will be worth nothing.
