Actually, one would not even see much of the Smokies, very much like from the present Lake View Road , as the views would go south. If it is really a north shore road, cove in, cove out, the views would mostly go to the south shore of the lake without any panoramic views. There is NC 28 now on the south side, which is not a south shore road, as it runs way up above the Fontana trench. If better managed for its visual resources it would by far eclipse what can be seen from the north side and could provide all the views anybody wants of the Great Smokies.
Planned road is not a ridge top road like the Blue Ridge Parkway , and would not offer frequent spectacular views. I highly doubt the road itself would draw visitors.
As a long time visitor to the GSMNP, particularly the southern extremes bordering Fontana Lake , I have personally witnessed the beauty of this relatively untouched portion of the Park. I marvel at the recovery this region has made since its rape at the hands of the timber industry many years ago, and how it has thrived due to limited utilization and encroachment.
