FEBRUARY/MARCH 2004 COMMENT SHEET SUMMARY 5. Please identify the location of landscape views within the study area that are important to you. Why do you value these locations? (Example: NC 28 Overlook. View looking toward Fontana Lake and GSMNP because…) Many people comment that the entire park's landscape is important to them. Shoreline vistas and uninterrupted forests are of high value, some state. Commenters recommend a balance between the views from a road to those from trails where no road can be seen or heard in order to maintain wild areas and natural habitat. Others state that pull-offs near Fontana Lake and parking spaces along the road would allow everyone to enjoy the views present within GSMNP. Other people want to protect the existing vistas any way possible. They do not support protecting selected overlooks while allowing for a road. Virtually all alternatives will negatively impact views from NC 28, some people state. Some also state that the views have become poor due to increased air pollution in the region and another road would further degrade the area. People comment that the best way to view the sights within the park is by motorless means, such as walking, biking, hiking, and horseback riding. The following are views that were of particular interest, regardless of any preferred alternative: All views are unique and important Andrews Bald Any views of Fontana Lake Appalachian Trail views Brier Knob Cemeteries Cheoah Bald Clingmans Dome Eagle Creek Foot trails from current roads Forest/Wild Areas Gregory Bald Hangover Knob Hazel Creek Home places Hooper Bald Huckleberry Knob Lakeshore Trail Little Bald Narrows High Rocks Newfound Gap Road Proctor Rocky Top Silers Bald Spence Field Various overlooks along NC 28 View of lake from Shuckstack fire tower Waterfalls Welch Ridge Wesser Bald Yellow Creek Mountains
