RECREATIONAL FACILITIES
| |
Recreational facilities discussed in the study area include accommodations activities such as hiking, camping, cycling, and water-related sports. Three possible results of such additional facilities are addressed in the comments: (1) economic growth for the region; (2) additional recreational opportunities in the park; and (3) impacts to the natural environment and human environment resulting from additional visitors. Those in favor of additional park facilities see the opportunity for an economically depressed area to benefit financially from the attraction of tourists to the area. People using such facilities would benefit from the use of public lands. Comments reflecting opposition to such facilities believe there are enough tourist destinations in the area, some of which are not being maintained. There is also a feeling that the tourists would have a negative impact on the small communities' way of life and sense of place. These impacts include increased congestion, pollution, and the changes in land use that would result from the accommodations being built for visitors to the area.
